Ewww! Yuck! The Dirtiest Germ Hotspots Inside Your Home

Where is filth lurking?

If you are getting ready for guests for the holidays, here are the top spots that you want to pay close attention.

Your home may appear clean, but it harbors hidden hotspots teeming with harmful bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Being aware of the germiest locations can help you target cleaning to create a healthier home.

Microbiologists reveal that one of the top offenders is the kitchen sink, especially the damp sponge or dishrag used to clean dishes. Food particles get trapped and allow bacteria like Salmonella and E.coli to multiply rapidly in the warm, moist environment. Disinfect the sink regularly and replace sponges weekly to control germs. My daughter-in-law tipped me off to Norwex cloths that have silver threads, which make them antimicrobial. I'm not a sponge person, but if you are then I would recommend tossing the used one weekly.

The bathroom is another germ haven. Toilet handles, faucet handles, and doorknobs are prime areas to spread nasty microbes from person to person. Make sure to scrub these surfaces frequently. Toilet bowls themselves also harbor germs, so clean them with a toilet bowl cleaner weekly. The bathroom floor around the toilet is also a hotspot, contaminated by bacteria that spray out from flushing. Mop and disinfect this area at least once a week. Get rid of the toilet toupee and wash the rug weekly. I would reconsider having soft surfaces like that crocheted doll that your grandma made to hide the TP. Think about the germs that are getting transferred to your reading material.

Do you remember this Seinfeld Episode? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NygOFsExGMU "Book in the Bathroom"

"I don't read in the bathroom."

Showerheads and bath toys are other bathroom areas that can collect mold and bacteria. Disinfect showerheads monthly with a 50/50 vinegar and water solution. Now that's something I didn't know. Imagine toxic rain. I'm going to jump up right now and fill a baggie. Bath toys should be cleaned and left to dry after each use. Don't forget about bath mats either - these collect fungi and other microorganisms from wet feet and should be laundered weekly. Funk under your feet. Ewwwww.

Your cellphone and computer keyboard also make the list of germiest places, gathering microorganisms from your hands throughout the day. Be diligent about wiping these items down daily with disinfecting wipes. Don't forget your TV remote controls and game controllers either.

When I was working at Uniontown Hospital, one of the pharmacist's daughter's was a Microbiologist. She swabbed every surface in her home and found out that the Microwave had the largest colony count of a variety of pathogenic bacteria. Again EWWW. Microwaves easily harbor bacteria and mold if splattered food is not cleaned frequently. Get a glass cover and wash it off as soon as you uncover the food. Give the interior a good scrub at least once a week.

Get yourself some of those antibacterial wipes and give the knobs and remotes a good swipe after you do the heavy cleaning. By paying extra attention to these hotspots for germs and regularly disinfecting them, you can maintain a cleaner home free of unwanted microbes. Be vigilant this cold and flu season and implement these tips to help protect you, your guests, and your family's health.
