How to Properly Use Hydrogen Peroxide

This article came about this week because I heard that someone used peroxide on an old wound. Yes, don't do that.

Hydrogen peroxide has long been a staple first aid antiseptic for cleaning minor cuts, abrasions, and burns. However, there are right and wrong ways to use hydrogen peroxide so that it is most effective and safe. Follow these tips for properly utilizing hydrogen peroxide in your first aid kit.

Always start by washing hands and cleaning the fresh wound with mild soap and water. This helps remove dirt, debris and bacteria. Gently pat the area dry with a clean towel.

Only use hydrogen peroxide on fresh, new wounds. Do not use it on healing wounds as it can damage new tissue growth. If it's been longer than 24 hours, stick to saline solution or clean water on healing wounds.

When using it for first aid, choose 3% concentration hydrogen peroxide. This is the typical brown bottle concentration sold in pharmacies. Higher concentrations can damage tissue and delay healing.

Pour hydrogen peroxide onto a clean cotton ball or pad. Never dip the cotton into the bottle as this contaminates the solution. Only pour onto the cotton.

Apply it gently onto the fresh wound and allow to bubble and work for a minute or two. Do not rub harshly or roughly scrub.

Rinse thoroughly with cool running water when finished. This washes away debris and removes any excess hydrogen peroxide.

Finish by applying antibiotic ointment and a sterile bandage to any wound to keep it protected. Change the bandage daily.

Hydrogen peroxide can also be used to help remove earwax. Tilt the head and carefully apply a few drops of 3% hydrogen peroxide into the affected ear. You don't need a fancy solution, just straight Hydrogen Peroxide from the bottle. Let it bubble for a few minutes then tilt the head in the opposite direction to drain. Repeat if needed.

Using hydrogen peroxide properly helps prevent infection and assists with healing. Follow these first aid and ear cleaning tips to keep hydrogen peroxide a part of your regimen.
