5 Tips for Weathering the Time Change

It's a fact. There are health risks with the time change. There are specific conditions made worse by the time change:
Migraines and headaches in general
Heart conditions
Late-afternoon sleepiness

1. If you are prone to migraines or headaches, hydrate well today and tomorrow. Cut out the alcohol and anything that triggers your headaches. Be gentle with yourself and give yourself a little bit extra TLC. If that means taking a bath, saying no to going out, or ordering food so you don't have to cook, do something nice for you today.

2. Heart conditions are made worse by the changing time, although the spring forward is worse than the fall back. Take good care of your heart today and take a 10-15 minute walk outside in nature.

3. Car accidents and driving mishaps are worse after the time change! Really! I know this to be true from my hour-long drive from Wheeling Hospital back home to Coraopolis. So be careful. Here's what I would do: I'd avoid putting the seat heater on (I nearly fell asleep several times with a warm cozy seat), and I'd open the window for cold brisk air, and maybe play some loud music. And sing along. Out loud. Who cares that you look and sound ridiculous? You're alive right?

4. Go to bed early tonight. Take advantage of the extra hour of sleep. Don't try to be "productive" or binge a new series. Just go to bed. And if you have trouble falling asleep, download Insight Timer and look for Kenneth in the sleep meditations. He will help the transition to dreamland. I go to bed with Kenneth every night.

5. Don't be annoyed by the clocks that need changing. Right before you go to bed, reset the clock on the range, the microwave, the coffee pot, the bedside alarm, and forget about that one that is up high. You never look up there anyway. The point is for you to let the little things go and don't get annoyed when frustrations happen. They're part of life, so let it go.

Be kind to yourself today

Go to bed early

Let the little things go
